Fathom review: the $0 plan that means it

Fathom's free plan does the thing the others only gesture at: unlimited recordings, unlimited transcriptions, real AI summaries, forever, at $0. That earned it second place on our shortlist — and this review is mostly about the line between what's genuinely free and what's cleverly Premium.

Disclosure: Fathom runs a partner program, and the marked buttons below are affiliate links — subscribing through one sends MinuteHand a referral fee; the price you pay stays Fathom's list price. Facts below come from Fathom's pricing page (now at fathom.ai), checked 2026-09-20.

What Fathom is

Fathom is a meeting recorder and note-taker that grew up inside sales calls and spread outward. It captures your Zoom, Teams, or Meet meetings — classically by sending its bot, and now also via a bot-free capture mode that Fathom labels beta — then serves back recordings, transcripts, instant summaries, and clips you can share instead of making colleagues watch an hour of video. Paid tiers add the machinery teams pay for: AI action items, custom summary templates, coaching metrics, CRM sync.

Fathom's pricing page also advertises a 90-day guarantee on paid plans — unusually long for the category, and worth knowing if you're deciding between trying Premium and agonizing about it.

The free plan's absence of meters deserves a beat of appreciation. No monthly minutes, no per-meeting cap, no lifetime import allowance ticking down — the three walls you'll hit on Otter's free tier simply aren't here. Fathom's bet is that the stock summary will eventually frustrate power users into Premium, and it's a fair bet, honestly made.

What it does well

  • Free that stays free. Unlimited capture and transcripts with no trial clock. For "just stop making me take notes," this is the strongest $0 in the category.
  • Speed of the loop. Instant summaries and shareable clips mean the meeting's output exists before you've refilled your coffee.
  • Bot-free option. The beta bot-free capture removes the awkward extra participant — a genuine etiquette upgrade, covered more in notes without a bot.
  • 90-day guarantee. Paid tiers can be un-bought for three months, per Fathom's own pricing page.

Where it falls down

  • The good notes are paid notes. AI action items and custom summary formats — the features most "AI note-taker" ads picture — live at Premium, $16/month annual. The free tier transcribes; it doesn't tailor.
  • Cloud-only, fewer privacy levers. No on-device processing option is documented; if data routing is a hard requirement, read our privacy rundown and the vendor's own security pages before rollout.
  • Beta means beta. Bot-free capture is labeled beta on Fathom's pages; expect edges. The bot path remains the default.
  • Noise handling isn't its job. Like every pure note-taker, Fathom transcribes the audio it's handed. Bad rooms make bad minutes — the accuracy problem lives upstream, where Krisp works.

Who Fathom actually suits

Anyone whose requirement list starts and ends with "record, transcribe, summarize, free." Freelancers, founders, students, and the meeting-adjacent public get more per dollar here than anywhere on the board — the dollar being zero. Sales teams graduating into coaching metrics and CRM plumbing will find Business competitive against Fireflies. If your guests bristle at bots and the beta makes you nervous, Krisp is the shipping, non-beta way to capture without an extra participant.

Verdict

8.0 / 10 on our rubric — the best pure free note-taker

Free-tier depth (9) and unmetered transcription (9) carry it; notes features score 7 because the tailored stuff is Premium, and privacy 6 for cloud-only processing. A whisker behind Krisp's 8.3, ahead of everything else. Weights and working: the shortlist.

Fair questions

Is the free plan a trial in disguise?

No — Fathom's pricing page markets it as free forever, with unlimited recordings and transcriptions. The upsell is capability (custom summaries, action items), not a clock.

Fathom the note-taker or Fathom the analytics tool?

Careful googling required: multiple products share the name. This review covers the meeting note-taker at fathom.ai (previously fathom.video) — not the web-analytics service of the same name.

Does the bot still join if I use bot-free capture?

No — that's the point of the mode — but it's beta, so verify behavior on your own setup before a high-stakes call. And either way, tell people you're recording; capture method changes etiquette, not obligation.
