Head-to-head

Otter vs Fireflies: minutes against memory

The two most-compared note-takers ration different things. Otter meters your minutes — how much it will transcribe. Fireflies meters your memory — how much it will keep. Once you see that, most of the decision makes itself.

The two philosophies

Otter sells transcription as a consumable. The free plan pours you 300 minutes a month in 30-minute glasses; Pro refills to 1,200 minutes with 90-minute glasses; only Business takes the meter off. Everything you transcribe, you keep.

Fireflies sells transcription as a utility and storage as the product. Every tier — including free — transcribes without minute limits, but the free tier's locker is small, and older recordings age out as it fills. You transcribe everything; you keep what your tier remembers.

Neither is wrong. They're pricing the two different fears: Otter bets you fear running out mid-month; Fireflies bets you fear losing the archive.

Where each one wins

Pick Otter if…

  • Your meetings run short — under 30 minutes free, under 90 on Pro
  • The live scrolling transcript is the feature you'll actually use
  • Colleagues already know it, easing the consent conversation
  • You transcribe interviews or lectures from the app itself

Pick Fireflies if…

  • Long meetings are normal and truncation is unacceptable
  • Notes must land in a CRM or task tool without a human courier
  • You want to interrogate a whole quarter of calls with AskFred
  • You're buying for a team, not a person

The traps in each direction

Otter's trap is the meter you forget about. The 30-minute free cap truncates politely — you discover the missing half of the retro when you go looking for it. And month-to-month billing at $16.99 doubles the advertised annual rate; Otter's is the widest such spread on our board.

Fireflies' trap is the archive you assumed. "Unlimited transcription" reads as "keep everything," but on the free tier the storage cap quietly retires old meetings, and AskFred's credits run out just as you get fond of it. The tier you need is set by your archive and your assistant usage, not your meeting count.

The shared trap is upstream of both: they transcribe whatever audio your meeting delivers. A boomy room and a distant laptop mic will make either tool look bad — that's an audio problem, and it has audio solutions, starting with a noise layer like Krisp in front of the call. Both send visible bots by default, so either way, announce the recording like a professional.

Our call

Teams: Fireflies. Short-meeting soloists: Otter. Most people: neither is the ceiling.

On our computed rubric Fireflies takes this pairing 7.3 to 6.2 — unmetered transcription simply covers more real calendars than Otter's minute math. But note both trail Fathom's free depth and Krisp's clean-audio-first design on the full board. If you're choosing between exactly these two: buy Fireflies for the team workflow, keep Otter for the live-transcript habit.

Fair questions

Which transcribes more accurately?

We haven't measured either, so we won't pretend. Both are competent cloud ASR; both degrade with noise, crosstalk and distant mics. Your room matters more than this choice — here's why.

Can I run both on a free plan and split the work?

People do: Otter for short interviews, Fireflies for long internal calls. It's two bots and two consent notices' worth of overhead, and two places to search later — workable, not elegant.

Why does your scoreboard rank both below Krisp and Fathom?

Free-tier depth and capture design. Fathom un-meters everything at $0; Krisp captures bot-free and cleans audio before transcribing. The weights and the script that produced the numbers are on the shortlist page.
